Koyo Ibushi Jin is a larger format tile series handcrafted in Funatsu‑cho, Himeji by the master ceramicists at Koyo Seiga. Made using the traditional Ibushi Kawara method, each tile is formed from clay that is slowly fired and then smoked in a reduction chamber. This process creates a natural carbon layer that gives the surface its distinctive Ibushi Silver finish, a soft metallic sheen that responds subtly to light and continues to develop a refined patina over time. Koyo’s expertise in this technique has been trusted in the restoration of cultural landmarks, including the UNESCO-listed Himeji Castle.

Jin tiles are reversible, offering both a smooth and a finely ribbed face. This dual finish allows designers to alternate textures within a single layout, creating quiet variation through light and shadow. Mounted on mesh for efficient installation, Jin tiles bring structure, rhythm, and calm to both wall and floor applications.

Like all Koyo Ibushi products, Jin is made from clay and carbon only. There are no glazes, synthetic treatments, or chemical additives. Its microporous structure provides natural humidity regulation, odour absorption, UV and frost resistance, and far-infrared emission. These qualities are inherent in the material, making it both beautiful and functional.

Koyo Ibushi Jin is ideal for architectural environments that require discipline, tactility, and a material presence that matures over time. Whether used in minimalist interiors or outdoor surfaces, it brings together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary restraint with quiet authority.
