Koyo Ibushi Kasuri is an interwoven mosaic tile series handcrafted in Funatsu‑cho, Himeji by the master ceramicists at Koyo Seiga. Using the traditional Ibushi Kawara method, clay is slowly fired and then smoked in a reduction chamber, forming a natural carbon layer across the surface. This creates the signature Ibushi Silver finish, a soft metallic sheen that shifts gently with the light and develops a deeper patina over time. Koyo’s expertise in this process has been relied on in the restoration of heritage sites, including the UNESCO-listed Himeji Castle.
The Kasuri format is defined by a rhythmic arrangement of rectangular tiles placed in alternating horizontal and vertical directions. The result is a refined woven effect that brings quiet movement and structure to any surface. Available in both flat and subtly uneven finishes, Kasuri tiles are mounted on mesh sheets for efficient installation.
Like all Koyo Ibushi tiles, Kasuri is made entirely from clay and carbon, without glazes or synthetic coatings. The microporous surface helps regulate humidity, absorb odours, resist frost and UV exposure, and emit far-infrared radiation. These functional qualities are naturally embedded in the material, making it both practical and enduring.
Koyo Ibushi Kasuri is ideal for interior walls, architectural facades, and paved surfaces where texture, geometry, and understated light interaction can add depth without distraction. It is a material rooted in Japanese tradition, yet perfectly suited to contemporary spaces that value balance, clarity, and craftsmanship.
